State board to take up pocket growth area in Clallam County March 11th, 2008 - 8:02am (Port Angeles) -- A state growth hearings board will take up land use policies that could have sweeping economic impacts in Clallam County. The Western Washington Growth Management Board will take up how pockets of growth called Limited Areas of More Intensive Rural Development. Clallam County has several areas that could be classified as "LAMIRDs". At direct issue is the Laird's Corner area, where members of the Dry Creek Coalition have argued the area should not be allowed to develop under the LAMIRD standards. Developers and some cities and counties see the LAMIRDs as a way to establish commercial areas outside of established urban growth boundaries. Also taking issue with the LAMIRD designation is Futurewise, a Seattle non-profit that has filed similar anti-growth suits in counties across the state. The growth board will conduct its hearing this morning in Port Angeles. |
